Route Map

Today’s walk was in aid of The Cockermouth Mountain Rescue in an event arranged by the The Wainwright Society.

The event was a challenge based on the 95 routes of ascent depicted in A. Wainwright’s Sixth Pictorial Guide ‘The North Western Fells’.

My chosen route was Ascent No. 92 - Whiteside form Lanthwaite Green

Mellbreak above the early morning shadows

Slightly higher now and the view from half way up Whin Ben includes Mellbreak, Blake Fell, Gavel Fell with Low Fell and Fellbarrow to the right

Overlooking Whin Ben

A glimpse of Loweswater (the village and lake) - the hazy sunshine becoming more evident as the morning progresses

At the summit of Whiteside and looking east along the ridge to Hopegill Head and Sand Hill

The ridge offers great views down Gasgale Gill...............

……………….....and Hope Gill - Dodd to the left and Ladyside Pike to the right

Looking back along the ridge from Hopegill Head  to Whiteside and beyond

Grasmoor, Gasgale Gill and Whiteside from Sand Hill

Sail, Eel Crag and Wandope over Coledale Hause from Sand Hill

Grisedale Pike and a bird's eye view of the mine workings at Force Crag Mine in Coledale from Eel Crag

Looking over Sail to Outerside and Causey Pike (a glimpse of Derwent Water in between)

Wandope from Eel Crag - the wind was very strong along the eastern facing ridges but also extremely warm

Wandope Moss and the path leading to the Grasmoor's summit

Hetty on the grassy expanse of Wandope Moss

The view down Rannerdale Beck from the top of Grasmoor’s southern edge - Whiteless Pike to the left and the

shoulder of Lad Howes to the right.

Looking towards the Scafell group over Whiteless Edge – yet another 'wish it wasn't so hazy' moment

The Whiteside  / Hopegill Head ridge from Grasmoor summits northern edge

Heading back towards Coledale Hause - Hopegill Head and Sand Hill in the centre

Hetty has spotted something...............

Looking down from the top of Gasgale Gill

Looking up Gasgale Gill to Hopegill Head and Sand Hill

Looking towards Loweswater from Whin Ben's lower southwestern slope

Grasmoor from Rannerdale

Wandope and Whiteless Pike from Rannerdale
